365 Days of Twinipedia - Day 40

Day Forty of Twinipedia:

Fact #40
Being pregnant can bring with it many unexpected events and medical experiences but most women do go through pregnancy without many serious complications.  Those who do end up having more dangerous issues medically are usually classified as high-risk and often times need to go to specialty doctors who are trained in high-risk pregnancies.

I had always thought that any multiples pregnancy, whether it be twins to quintuplets, was always considered high-risk.  While reading an article from About.com, located under their pregnancy section, I found that this belief of mine was not scientifically correct.  The article shared that "being pregnant with multiples is not necessarily a high-risk situation, except when dealing with higher order multiples or specific problems." And they stated that one of their readers was correct in sharing that twin pregnancies and births are certainly "high-need" but not Necessarily high-risk  The article goes on to suggest some good advice stating that "finding a practitioner who is experienced with multiples births, but one who will not panic at every corner" is a good start for most women carrying twins.
High-risk scenarios may happen, but not all woman expecting two babies will need high-risk care and so getting the appropriate care from an expert is a good beginning point (for any pregnancy).
